How many page ins? Close to or over a million? If the # of page outs is < half # of page ins, there is absolutely no reason at all to upgrade memory. It won't make your system any faster or better responsive. If it is more than half, your system could use a memory upgrade and the closer the two numbers are together, the higher your need for memory.
Number of page outs are completely irrelevant and don't mean diddle squat, unless viewed in relation to the number of page ins.
Can you enlighten us a bit more as to where you get these proportions? Looking at my 4GB MBA I see that there is nearly no free RAM, the page ins are at 1.52GB, and the page outs are a measly 22.6 MB with a swap of 6 MB. How does no free RAM equate with your rational above?

p0intblankSep 5, 02:33 PMOnly Apple can excite me with a phone. :) We all know it's coming; it's just a matter of... well, when? I still like the name iChat mobile, as someone suggested in an earlier thread. I'm very interested to see how Apple designs it to interact with our Macs. Obviously iTunes support will be present. iSync with Address Book is also a given. What else?

chrisfromalbanyApr 20, 08:19 AMAnother factor is that downloadable games don't have printed materials, shipping costs and other middleman costs associated with them. The average price of a downloadable game tends to be $10-20 cheaper than a physical version of the same product. Similarly Aperature costs $200 in brick and morter retail stores but only $80 from Apple's App Store.
Right.. someone that gets it.. It is not that I wont get it I will but will get the phyiscal copy because it is a better deal, but shouldn't have to be.
The only thing that I do not like about Steam (or ANY of those digital content stores) is that you cannot sell the game once you no longer want or need it and transfer it to the account of somebody else. You can only do this when you purchase an item as a gift. This actually deprives me of a legal right that I have as a customer in Germany - we CAN legally transfer even OEM licenses that were bundled with some hardware.

handsome peteApr 14, 11:17 AMHowever, I can see this being a problem for professional editors. The lack of tracks poses problems, just off the top of my head.
I think it's difficult to come to any type of conclusion without seeing how customizable the workflow is. For all we know, there is still the option to edit "traditionally." I viewed this more as a demo of what new stuff they are bringing to the table. Of course everyone sees automated processes and scream "iMoviePro" without considering that they're merely an optional way to work.
Though I'd be very disappointed if Apple cut out key features of FCP (like multi-cam editing for example) only to sell them as add-ons I for one welcome the idea of them breaking up the studio and allowing customers to purchase only the parts they need or gradually purchase the entire suite over time.
I'd love to see Color (among others) get a facelift to match the new UI but I have a feeling that with all the effort on rewriting FCP we'll have to wait a little longer for the rest of the suite to get their chance.
Things like mutli-cam editing would have to be built into the software architecture from the get go in my opinion. I don't think we'd see things like that as an add-on. Plugin packages and other parts of the suite (Motion, DVDStudio, etc.) are things we'd likely see in the app store. I do like the idea of being able to buy the suite components separately. I like knowing that I have Motion at my disposal, but I do all of my motion graphic work in After Effects so I really don't need it. Same goes with Compressor. I don't have nearly the disdain for it as others seem to have (never had any issues with it), but I use Episode for all of my encoding.

EvangelionJul 12, 03:24 PMSheesh, that independent study is all you have to back up yourself.
So, you would like me to ignore FACTS, is that it? I should just pretend that the study does not exists?
You are claiming that Wikipedia is not accurate. I'm saying that according to independent study carried out by the Nature-magazine, Wikipedia IS accurate. You are disputing that claim. In that case I think that you need to go talk to Nature and tell them that they have no idea what they are talking about.
on the A380 article, the height was changed from 78ft 6in to 78ft 3in!
Oh the humanity! So which of those figures is the right one? If it's the latter, are you then complaining becuase they find errors and fix them?
Thank $DEITY Britannica has no errors in it! No sirree! Nevermind the fact that it DOES contain errors as well (in Natures comparison, they found 8 "major errors". 4 of those errors were in Wikipedia, 4 were in Britannica.
And there are plenty more. I read one about "Larry King's farting habit" that stayed up for a month.
Exception to the rule. That is what Nature said about those kind of entires in Wikipedia after their study. You do know that there are over a million articles in Wikipedia, and you are whining becuase you found one that has some weird comments in it? And if it stayed up for a month, why didn't you fix it? I have actually fixed two articles in Wikipedia (I don't remember the other, but the second was some grammar-fixes in English article about Finnish mythology.). Took me about 5 minutes in total.
And maybe he does have a farting-habit ;)?
Yes, many articles in Wikipedia a accurate, but minor things can be changed without notice.
Well, there is the history-function that provides information to what was change, when was it changed and who changed it. So it's not like the changes simply appear without anyone noticing. Each article has a detailed history that shows EXACTLY what has been changed.
And when I said the thing about the bums, I meant that I'd rather read what a person with a PhD in Botany has to say about the Brasilian Verbena over a Wikipaedist that just has googled the subject a few times.
What makes you think that the article in Wikipedia was not written by someone who has a PhD in Botany? "oh no, they are just bums who use Google!". Generalize much?
So, what do you have do say? Maybe quote that study few times again for me, please.
Oh, I dunno. Maybe YOU could just say "but anyone can edit it! They are just bums!" few more times? Nevermind that it's utterly pointless and dumb, but that's the only thing you seem to have to say.
"but.... anyone can edit it!"

HecubusProSep 5, 02:54 PMI would get one in like 2 years after it has gone through revisions and everyone else has had problems with it. Sure I'll want one. But I'm happy for now since I have the kewlest phone out - Nokia 8801!
I agree with that sentiment, if only because I'm on contract with my phone for another year and a half. By that time, we'll know how viable the phone and service is, and whether it's actually worth it (let alone it's a reality or not :) .)
peharriNov 3, 08:51 AMAs is usual with anything to do with the iPhone, this is ill-informed speculation based upon small nuggets of information that do not imply anything remotely close to what's being suggested, and where the rumour becomes more absurd with every added detail.
Is there going to be an iPhone? I have no idea. I was convinced there wouldn't be, but with Motorola firing shots across Apple's bows with changes to the ROKR, and Apple trademarking "iPhone" everywhere, it seems possible however ridiculous it may be.
Is it going to be on an MVNO? Depends. Is Apple, by releasing the iPhone, just planning on killing its own media business, or is the long term strategy the complete destruction of Apple itself, with huge investments in burdersome businesses pursuing strategies the company is completely unfamiliar with and which can only ever appeal to a tiny minority in the country?
Does Cingular's announcement in any way preclude the possibility of the iTS going "online" in a cellular form? Answer: Did any of the amateur (and a few of the professional) "analysts" actually BOTHER, at any point, to READ what Cingular itself was proposing? Cingular is setting up a NON-EXCLUSIVE system for music distribution that involves THREE COMPETING STORES. You're saying that this means Cingular will refuse, point blank, to add the iTS.
Why? Where the hell do you get that from? Cingular's being neutral and you're saying it means Cingular has somehow decided against allowing the iTS to join in the fun when it's ready to do so?
This story is plain awful. It shouldn't be on page 1. It shouldn't even be on page 3. It's a bunch of speculation based upon evidence that doesn't remotely back-up the speculation given. It serves only to pander to a minority of Apple Phone fetishist's wet dreams. Apple will, apparently, because Cingular is currently allowing three competing music stores to operate on their network, reject Cingular, operate an MVNO, sell only the "iPhone", a revolutionary phone that's an iPod and a cellphone, and a Newton, but actually just a phone, but it's also a 770, but actually no it's an iPod with wireless connectivity, on it, and due to their inexperience somehow make this all work and get 75% market penetration in six months and save the iPod!
Oh come on! What the hell? What the hell!
Can you rumourmongers come up with something a little more concrete. You know, something that actually makes sense. Yes, you want a phone. And I'm quite sure Apple can design a nice one too. Hey, tell you what, I want Mac OS X to run legally on my Thinkpad too. That doesn't mean they're going to do it.
What's the difference between Mac OS X running on a Thinkpad and an iPhone? I can see how Apple can make a profit and increase their marketshare by selling Mac OS X for Thinkpads.
MaxLongwoodApr 10, 07:56 PMI don't want to read too much into this, but it's still upsetting that Steve Jobs' health is in bad shape. That being said, I can't wait to read this.
