BwinskiMar 24, 01:06 PMAARRRGGHHHH!!!! I STILL can't get an answer if the iPads2's that I ordered at 7:30 AM on 3/11 will ship before April 1-6.... It's like trying to pull teeth out of an angry, virile cat.
Does anyone know what "Prepared for Shipment" means in Apple-Speak??

rmhop81Apr 12, 11:14 AMOnly question. Why?
Some say Apple need to buy Netflix. Have those of you even considered what Netflix charges for monthly streaming?
$8
Apple will never let customers eat that much for so little. The day Apple buys Netflix, DVDs would stop, and streaming would go up to $30 a month.
Promised.
and look at the crappy content that they have for streaming. everything is super old. hopefully if apple does this, they would have new content and people wouldn't mind paying more bc the content is better.

The other thing to realize here is Lion. I don't see how you can split WWDC with an annoucment of a new phone (and a new iOS), and a new operating system 'for the rest of us'. Apple doesn't split messages. My feeling is WWDC is about Lion and nothing else, focusing on a 10.7 release sometime in July (for back to school purchases).
I can easily see iOS 5 being released in the 'iPod announcement' in Aug/Sept, with a new iPod Touch, Nano, and ('.... One More Thing...") iPhone5 (iPhone Nano?) all announced to be shipping before Nov 1 (pre Xmas Shopping).
Could be wrong, could be right, but I strongly doubt iPhone5 iOS5 news at WWDC.

MacMan86May 4, 03:48 PMNope. That' not it. They just don't want to give you the SKU because otherwise you could easily figure out how much you are overpaying.
Because so much of the cost of a computer is the cost of the CPU? Of course not. Everyone can see there's more to an iMac than just the CPU.
Scrolling through some of your previous posts, I have to wonder why you bother with this site, you're never going to see something you like.

srathiApr 4, 09:47 AMtrue but TCO for any subscription iOS device is likely to be many hundreds of $$$ more than an android that gives a similar experience.
TCO is where the smart people look, I'm not surprised you missed it..;)
So, in short, you are out of arguments and just making stuff! Spoken like a true iFan!

AffirmedApr 13, 04:17 PMThe software handles 4K video, not even "prosumers" work in 4K so I doubt they'd bother supporting that and not things like EDL and OMF exports.
I hope you are right, but it Apple has taken a decidedly Online only approach to Final Cut X rather than the old school model of NLE for EDL creation.
That's great for a lot of people, but you do have to wonder how that new timeline kicks out an EDL, don't you? T
he majority of productions are still tape based for now, but it is shifting rather quickly (especially with the HDSR shortage). I would imagine that Apple is gambling on the inevitable future of tapeless workflows and so I don't think it would be that crazy for them to leave out traditional tools for NLE to Online workflows.

mlmathewsMay 4, 12:46 PMWhen is Apple going to figure out how to implement software patches instead of forcing people to download a whole copy of the OS for every little update?

itcheroniMar 23, 02:18 AMI've read a little on the subject of Japanese society (The Chrysanthemum and the Sword is good) and visited a few times. I don't have a complete answer, but a couple of points people haven't made yet are:
- Japan is racially and culturally quite pure - with low immigration and a high barrier for immigrants to integrate (the language). Japanese language and culture is not widely spread outside of Japan. This leads to them having a very inward focus, and a high amount of loyalty to their own society. As a Westerner/English speaker, you could disgrace yourself in your own society, yet still find a happy home somewhere culturally similar. For a Japanese person there is no other home - if they disgrace themselves to their fellow Japanese, they risk being ostracised from everything they hold dear. (This is the reasoning given in TCANS for the low surrender rate of Japanese troops in war - a Western army will surrender with 30% dead, for the Japanese 90%+ would have to die, since to surrender would be to disgrace oneself and become ostracised. This is the same reasoning for the Japanese army's poor treatment of prisoners of war in WWII - as the social standing of one who surrenders is very low).
- Having transgressed, Japanese society is happy to throw the book at a suspected criminal - and extends few of the rights arrestees enjoy in the West. Prisoners can be held for 23 days before being charged, the legal system assumes guilt and police have traditionally interrogated in private. When a case reaches trial, there's a >98% conviction rate, and trials have until very recently (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8181225.stm) all be Judge-only trials (no jury). There's evidence that lenient Judges face career setbacks.
So yes, the Japanese people may be educated, moral, disciplined - but there are also very strong societal pressures to conform, and if a person did loot, they'd expect to be treated extremely severely.
I think you're spot on. I lived in Japan for a while, in a very rural part, and it was like that. For crime, the burden is on the accused to prove innocence, not the other way around like in Western cultures. And there is no search and seizure. If they believe you might have done something, they can search you all they want. If someone was caught with drugs, his phone records would be searched and every single person on that phone list would be searched. In Japan, you really can't get away with a crime. And like you said, your circle of friends and family is all you have in Japan. There's no running away from who you are. If, in a time of crisis, you become a thief, everyone would lose all respect for you. One of my favorite Japanese mma fighters was disowned by his father for failing his high school exit exam. Think about how shameful being a thief would be. And in Japanese culture, fighting on in times of hardship is a very important quality. They sort of see it as a time to show your best. At least that's what I get from watching Japanese mma fighters.

chipchenApr 28, 11:51 AMI'd bet good money that they didn't even find the right people... they probably got pressure from Apple, so they either found some people to take the fall (and paid their families off) or just found some scapegoats that look good enough for the fall.
The real people are probably just laying low right now... they'll get caught eventually though... cause they got a taste....

Not that the Juke isn't ugly.
You cheated. He said without mentioned the Aztek so you used its twin. :p
The Rendezvous was the good looking model of the twins( not that it was a hard thing to do.....). But, you think those models are uglier than the Juke?
Those cars are ugly as well, but the Juke is the new Aztek, IMHO.

Release date for the new Shuffle? :D
when i ordered from the apple store online, the receipt said: ship Oct. 31 and arrive Nov. 7....
but i am thinking (more hoping) that with Apple's general release date of 'October' that they are defaulting to the end of the month to cover their butts.
that gives them the leeway to extend release dates if something goes awry and if things go well & they ship sooner than expected, then Apple will have some pleasantly surprised customers.... those are just my thoughts.
it's too bad, because when i heard 'October' i assumed Oct. 1... i should have known...
but amazon is a pretty reliable source and the 11th is MUCH better than the 31st... i am on board and very hopeful that this is indeed the actual release date :)

Good to see Apple doing the right thing on this. Sad that it took a media storm and x-gate monicker to make them take action.

eternlgladiatorApr 26, 12:21 PMPretty sure he's in a parking lot and parked, buddy.
I don't think so unless they're that afraid of door dings in belgium. That's traffic.
aleckSep 12, 02:12 PMI'm really puzzled what you people see good at this. This is pure *****.
Apple took the best small flash-based player in the world and made it the worst. With direct USB plug, you had amazing portability, still had MP3 player and good take it wheever you want. I regularly used to transfer small files from/to work, exchange files with friends etc.
With this, I would need to carry that stupid dock as well.
So it still has no screen at all, now has no USB as well, but it has the hinge. Wow.
The worst piece of "design" ever offered by Apple. Probably designed by a person that never actually used Shuffle in real life.
mrsir2009Apr 11, 01:11 AMHopefully this wont start more "Steve Jobs is near death" rumors.
Oh but it will
krykertOct 14, 12:21 PMPrincetonians, in my experience, are fratboys, prudes, and associated squares--by far the worst of the Ivies. Not a creative bone in the entire student body. They wouldn't know Macintosh if it bit them in their collective beige butt.
So tell me, how on earth is this good news? Unimaginative folk like these don't belong on our platform. Much better to celebrate the longstanding prevalence of Macs on progressive, independent-minded, and artistic campuses such as Brown and Columbia. But Princeton? Give me a break.
